Epic Games: Android Too Slow for Gaming Compared to iPhone, iPad
Epic fail: Android devices with ‘better specs” still suck for games, no match for iPhone or iPad.
iOS / iPad Gaming vs. Consoles
Tim Sweeney from Epic Games, developer of hit titles including Gears of War and iOS Infinity Blade [iTunes] talks about mobile iOS gaming versus consoles. On Apple iPad 2’s increase in graphics performance:
In consoles, you see “a 10-20x leap in performance every 7-8 years.” So Apple’s performance curve, ramping 9x in a single year, is both “astonishing” and rising at an “alarming rate.”
But isn’t the Apple iPad 2 crippled with 512MB of RAM? It turned out that Epic Game is said to be totally happy with the iPad 2’s 512MB RAM because “it’s as much as the Xbox 360.”
Apple iPhone + iPad vs. Android
Epic Games explains why there aren’t show stopper games on Android:
“When a consumer gets the phone and they wanna play a game that uses our technology, it’s got to be a consistent experience, and we can’t guarantee that [on Android]. That’s what held us off of Android.” The problem with Android is consistency. “If you took the underlying NGP hardware and shipped Android on it, you’d find far far less performance on Android. Let’s say you took an NGP phone and made four versions of it. Each one would give you a different amount of memory and performance based on the crap [the carriers] put on their phone.”
Successful multi-platform developer who makes real games confirms that iOS is better than fragmented Android. What a surprise!
ObamaPacman’s take: too bad flaky fandroids are easily fooled. Buying what the specs say should happen and not what the devices really does is just foolish.
