Reston Apple Store, iPad Launch Day Line / Queue Photos
iPad launch day queue at Apple Store Reston Virginia, photos and quick story.
The iPad Line
Arrived at Apple Store Reston in the morning. The storefront glass is covered in black cloth. There are 2 police cruisers from the Sheriff’s department in front of this relatively small Apple Store for security.
Took a photo (first photo in sequence). Turned out to be part of the non-preorder line:
Apple has two lines for the iPad launch, one for those who pre-order / reservation and one for those without.
Forgot to look up the lines so got into the wrong line. But, within seconds an Apple employee comes by to check to see if I am in the right line. I was redirected to the reserved line.
This Apple Store is serving colorful cookies, coffee, and water:
Start of the reserved iPad line:
it was not the seemingly more crowded iPhone lines, but there were more people than OP expected, especially with half the iPad lineup (Wi-Fi + 3G iPad) not set to arrive for about a month.
I followed the reservation line around the corner. Got into the line probably around 20 feet back from the cornerl.
An employee with iPod touch checked names of those in line and confirmed their iPad reservation. After checked in, chatted with some nice Apple Store employees.
Most of the Apple cheers happened in front of the Store, while an Apple Store employee talks about how the line will move. The ratio is said to be 10 iPad reserved person to 1 unreserved person into the store.
iPad Apple Store Launch Day
Store opened at 9am.
I typically schedule it to make the first round of people into the store for Apple Store openings, but didn’t make the cut for the iPad launch. Still around the corner after the first round of people entered the store. Took a video after moving to the corner:
Apple Store employee announced business consultation appointment (I was offered it but didn’t take it as the early times are gone).
And a photo:
iPad Accessories in Apple Store
Got in around 9:20. Got assigned a specialist who shows iPad accessories. Apple has some accessories in stock, Apple iPad case, iPad VGA output, & iPad dock are in stock at that time.
Accessories are not even out of their boxes. From the look of it, iPad is a tight fit in the demo iPad case / stand. The case seems like it can do its job. Bought one.
iPad dock seems to have very tight tolerance, iPad in iPad case does not fit in iPad Dock. So didn’t buy the iPad dock.
Got some info on Apple mobile me and Apple Care for iPad.
After getting the accessories, iPad Case and iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter, was brought to Genius Bar to pick up reserved iPad. With the iPad picked up, the Apple specialist used an iPod touch with purpose built bar code scanner and credit card reader to finish the transaction.
After paying for the iPad, you can choose to take it home and activate it yourself or get the free Personal Setup service right in the Apple Store. Most people know how to use an iPod or iPhone, but a few people seems to getting the service.
On the way out, checked out the about 12 iPads in the front of the store set up for demo:
After leaving, around 9:45, there are still lines in both reserved and line for walk in iPad orders.
Here are the goodies safe and sound:
