iPhone Bezel: Very Hard & Resistant to Impacts

U.S. Patent No. 7,688,574 was originally filed January 5, 2007. It was published on July 10, 2008 and awarded on March 30, 2010. The invention is credited to Stephen P. Zadesky, Philip M. Hobson, Tang Yew Tan, and assigned to Apple Inc.

The patent, titled “Cold worked metal housing for a portable electronic device,” is more than good looks.

Highlight of the patent:

  • Bezel is “held by a spring that engages a brace and the wall.”
  • “Manufactured from cold worked stainless steel, it is hard and resistant to impacts.”
  • “Cold worked steel facilitates manufacturing… requiring very little machining.”

The iPhone bezel patent demonstrates Apple’s philosophy of seamlessly integrating form and function in more ways than meets the eyes:

“Existing cases… are not always easily manufactured, aesthetically pleasing, or sufficiently resistant to impacts,” the patent notes. “Accordingly, there is a need for a hard, easily manufactured and aesthetically pleasing case for portable electronic devices.”

iPhone Steel Bezel Technology Cross Section

The deceptively “simple” looking iPhone bezel reveals its technology under the cross section:

Figure 6 from the iPhone bezel patent titled “Cross-sectional view of the assembled portable electronic device with an embodiment of the present invention.”

Must be the reason why iPhone are very impact resistant while the iPhone-wannabe such such as the Google Nexus One suffers various impact problems and are said to be “not for pockets.”

Originally Applied: July 10, 2008? No. Try January 5, 2007

At this time, Appleinsider lists the patent was “originally applied for on July 10, 2008.” However that’s wrong. The iPhone steel bezel patent was first filed January 5, 2007. Just days before the original iPhone was first introduced to the world on January 9, 2007.
