Windows XP Security Update Causes BSoD and Reboot Hell

This week’s Windows XP security update causes Blue Screen of Death for “non-trivial number” of XP users. The affected PC suffers from the dreaded Windows BSoD error page. Some users can’t even launch Windows in safe mode, the diagnostic mode that’s often a last-chance way to boot a PC.

Microsoft Windows XP Security Update Causes BSoD and Reboot Hell

After installation of various Windows updates, many Windows XP users found their PCs suffers from the Blue Screen of Death, accompanied by the cryptic error message: “PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA” or “STOP: 0×00000050″ errors. Many users are unable to boot their PCs as a result of the Microsoft software update.

The problem is later found by security analysts to be caused by Windows security patch MS010–15 which is suppose to fix “Vulnerabilities in Windows kernel could allow elevation of privilege.”
